Why Can't You Play Music?

As a musician, I constantly have people tell me how much they would love to play music but that they were never able to learn how. When I ask why, they usually tell me it was too difficult. They took traditional lessons as a kid or teenager and at some point, they got frustrated and confused and stopped. They not only quit lessons, but gave up their dream of playing music, thinking that they must be too dumb to get it and that they would never be able to express themselves in that way. Whenever I hear someone communicate their unfulfilled desire to play music by telling me that it was beyond their ability to comprehend, it pains me greatly. Music should be available to all comers and the ability to grasp its fundamentals should not be out of reach...
